Project results

All partners organised guidance in the workplace using different approaches. This included direct liaison with employers, trade union representatives, training managers and human resource managers.  The partners developed the networks to support this programme and then a detailed analysis was provided using case studies. A final project manual outlining new approaches to guidance in the workplace.

In addition all partners, undertook national training programmes to develop Guidance in the Workplace. Following the national training programmes common training modules were produced. Further detail about the national training programmes and the approach taken in the project can be found in the final training evaluation report.

Additionally 5 common training modules were developed for guidance counsellors involved in guidance in the workplace and other professionals working in the field eg trade union representatives, human resource development managers, professionals from the field of education.

INTRODUCTION TO GUIDANCE IN THE WORKPLACE TRAINING

The course  was developed within the Guidance in the workplace project.  The modules are aimed at guidance counsellors working with those in employment and/or other professionals involved in the delivery of guidance in the workplace eg trade union representatives, human resource development managers, professionals from the field of education. Within the materials,  they are referred to as other guidance agents. Since the levels of qualifications of the participants at the training are different, it is prepared as a resource pack rather than a self standing training programme.  The course is composed of the following five topics: Introduction to guidance in the workplace, Guidance in the  assessment of prior learning, the analysis of educational needs and opportunities for those in employment, referrals  and  networking. Each module is introduced with a session planner and two working documents, the power point presentation and worksheets. 

Module  ONE:  Introduction to guidance in the workplace

Offers a clear understanding of the whole course and it’s structure. It provides an increased understanding of the political, economic and social context which is driving the delivery of guidance in employment at European as well as national/local level,  and a greater awareness of the contribution guidance in employment can make.

Module TWO:  Assessment of prior learning

Offers an understanding of why guidance in the assessment of prior learning is important, as well as an understanding of  APEL and an understanding of the existing structures in specific countries, and an  understanding of how to access APEL systems.

Module THREE: Analysis of educational needs and opportunities for those in employment

Offers an introduction into the analysis of educational needs and opportunities in the workplace and  sources of information for the analysis of educational needs and opportunities in the workplace.

Module  FOUR: Referrals

A  clear understanding of the benefits and pitfalls of using referral networks whilst offering guidance in employment, an understanding of the range of clients needs that can be met through use of appropriate referrals, and an awareness of different approaches to cataloguing and recording referrals.

Module  FIVE: Networking in guidance in the workplace
